Mee Sen is fantastic. While they have your classic favorites and do them well, their menu has so much more to offer. Get adventurous and try some stuff you've never heard of - you will probably find some new favorites you'll wish were on the menu at your old favorite Thai restaurant. Also of note is their peanut sauce, which has flavor and body beyond what you'll find most places; the mhoo satae shows this off excellently and is a great starter or bar snack. The place itself is dark and cozy with a rough-hewn vibe that helps make it feel a little exotic. Sitting by the door in the winter can get a little cold, but the food will have you forgetting about that quickly enough. ~ E
Absolutely loved the food here. Came for the tulip festival, with my wife and father in-law, who have both lived in Thailand for a long time, and even they were impressed. Tastes exactly like the street cart food I ate in Thailand with my wife. The Mhoo Dang was excellent and the egg noodles were cooked perfectly. My wife's order which was Boat Noodles were amazing as well. We were all very impressed. We honestly stopped in to kill some time before heading back to Washington. The waitress was extremely friendly and professional. She also spoke fluent Thai according to my father in-law. We all agreed to come back to Oregon to do something else and pass in to eat here again. ~ S P
Mee-Sen’s Mhoo Tom Yum is one of my all time favorite dishes in the world. I used to live down the street in my 20s and I would order this dish when I had an upset stomach, was hungover, and right after every cashed paycheck. Because of that it served as a source of comfort for me and is my go to dish. Some of the staff even would tease me about ordering the same thing every time. I ordered the soup so many times during the COVID-19 lock downs I always joked that I was keeping their business open. It just always felt like a warm hug when I needed one! Dishes are so much more special when they have good memories associated with them. Thank you Mee Sen! ~ Eleanor D
Our favorite Thai restaurant in the Humboldt/Boise neighborhood. The staff are so friendly, and the food is ridiculously good. Having eaten our way through the vast bulk of their menu over the last few years I can confidently say that everything they serve is delicious! The dishes are packed with flavor, and everything is always cooked very well. Our favorites are the wrapped prawns, guay tiew tom kha, krapow, hat yai fried chicken, and the Thai curry (get it with the roti!!). They also have a nice selection of cocktails, and the service is top notch! One of our favorite spots on Mississippi, and a fantastic restaurant overall. ~ Sam G
This reminds me of one of my favorite Thai restaurants in California. I enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere. It is challenging finding a Thai place that is not a fusion or does not use too much oil in their cooking. See-Sen is a gem. They have a great set up. The downstairs is cozy and the upstairs is great for larger groups. I have had multiple items on their menu and they are consistently prepared and tasty. The service is prompt and friendly. This has become my go to spot for Thai food in PDX. I will travel across town if need be. Highly Recommend !! ~ Teo J
Delicious noodles. The boat noodles and khao soy were fantastic. Like visiting Thailand. Great flavor, tender meat, very satisfying. Guessing the rest of the menu would be just as good. Something to be aware of: The tables were tiny and the seating felt a tad awkward, but it must be difficult to arrange seating in the relatively small space at the establishment. Didn’t tank the experience of the food for us, but if you are a larger person this may be a consideration for you when selecting this spot for your meal. Would definitely go back again if we are in the neighborhood. ~ Tom K
My wife and I ate here last year and absolutely fell in love with it. It's easy to get lost in Portland trying to find the BEST Thai food. There is a plethora of places to explore and enjoy. In my humble opinion, this place is the best. The humble and cozy decor is a disguise for the absolute flavor BOMB your mouth is about to enjoy. I order their food to go all the time for my wife while she's hard at work. She finds great comfort in knowing such a wonderful and flavorful meal is waiting for her when she takes a break. These people really get food and really love food. It shows. ~ thegatorviking
Really great Thai food. I came here with a friend on a weekday night, and we were seated outside promptly (outdoor seating available and no indoor seating due to covid). Service was friendly, we asked for recommendations and ended up sharing a khao soi (curry noodle soup from northern Thailand) and Ba Mhee Haeng Poo Mhoo Dang (egg noodles with vegetables and BBQ pork). Both flavors were amazing, and the noodles in both bowls were super chewy and tasty. I really enjoyed the meal! Prices are a bit high as this came out to be $29 pre-tip. ~ Andrea W
Really cool spot, squeezed next to a vegan place, but they took my order at 9:30 were super great in doing so, because it was a half an hour till close and they didnt have to do so - and I don't do that usually. The ladies who worked there were awesomely friendly. The chicken wings with the peanut sauce were great, creamy, slight hint of fish sauce, tender, and I can highly recommend. Had the Goong Ob Woon Sen as well, great spice level and noodles were perfectly cooked. Will be going back to try more. ~ Rachael A
When our group of 6 arrived at Mee-Sen Thai Eatery, we noticed a sign that said the restaurant would be closing in 5 minutes. We expected that they would turn us away. On the contrary, the waitress greeted us with a smile and a friendly welcome. The food was fresh and delicious, and the portions were generous. The service was excellent, and we never felt rushed. All 6 of us had a lovely time enjoying the food and atmosphere. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants authentic Thai food and outstanding service. ~ mary d
My partner and I loved this place!! Ive been trying fried rice from different restaurants and this was by far my favorite. I got the tom yum fried rice and it was sooo flavorful, usually I want to add some type of sauce to the dishes I order even if they're already good, but with this one there was just no need. They have so many interesting choices, not to mention sticky rice with custard in addition to sticky rice with mango for dessert (both are lovely)! The service was good too. I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu. ~ Aru
Update: after 11 years, Mee Sen has become one of my favorite Thai places in Portland. Their food is consistently fresh and high quality, their drinks are excellent, and while service is still a bit on the slow side, I never have any issues. I don’t mind waiting, I’m not going to sit down at a restaurant if I’m in a hurry! Added 2 stars to my review because they deserve all 5, and I’m so glad they’re still around so that I could update this old review!! I like Mee-Sen a lot. It's on Mississippi Ave. which gives it extra points for being in my favorite little neighborhood in the city, but the food is really good and creative. There's a lot of Northern Thai on the menu- and none of it is served very spicy, but they're happy to hot it up for you. I consistently order the Larb gai (larb salad with chicken) and ask for some extra heat. The dessert thing with bread and cream sauce- I don't even know what it's called because when I bit into it I forgot my name. Dessert amnesia. Delicious. ~ Bryna H
One of the best Thai food places in Portland in my opinion. Comfortably rivals (and often bests) other, much more expensive and critically rated, Thai places in the city (like PaaDee and Kati). Their stir fry is sooo good, but my favourites are the Khao Soi Gai and Giew Grob Pad Thai. Also their Peek Gai Todd! Been eating here for almost a decade, love this spot. Edit: Only order dine-in/take-out, do NOT get delivery. Their portions and flavours are still good with take-out/dine-in, but delivery sucks. ~ Samuel
So good! I liked the atmosphere a lot. It had a rustic feel and it was very comfortable. The food was delicious. Had some fried broccoli leaves, weird but very good in an odd way. Chicken was fantastically crispy. The salad rolls and peanut sauce was amazing too. Didn’t feel rushed at all and the weight time was very minimal even being very busy. With the the food didn’t take very long either. Our appetizer came quickly almost as soon as we ordered it. Amazing. 5 stars. Would so go again. ~ Alexis C
The tiny single seat stools are dangerous, I had knelt down to pick up a napkin and feel over. I do appreciate the other diners that offered to help, I didn't get a chance to thank them. But peanut sauce was great!! Did have to wait a long time for refills (we never got then) and for the check, to be fair--I think there were only 2 waitresses tending to everyone. But besides a bruised hip, embarrassing fall, and unquenchable thirst-- id go back!!! ~ Chad Y
Mee Sen Thai is THE best thai food in town hands down. Their Khao Soi is to die for. Truly, it's as authentic as it comes, and this is coming from someone who's enjoyed it in Chiang Mai. Plus, the staff has always been so wonderful and kind. When I made a reservation for 10 of us for a friend's birthday dinner, they were extraordinarily accommodating. Our waitress even gave us some birthday candles for the cake we brought. Can't recommend this place enough. ~ Alyson B
First time here and I just instantly added it to my list of favorite food spots in Portland. The food is rich and savory and the price is right for the dishes being made. Other Thai style places would easily charge a lot more for this quality of food, but this establishment is fair and the flavor is all their. They also have happy hour drink and food specials that are really something. Take a moment and visit, you won't be disappointed. ~ Scott
One of the best authentic Thai food in Portland! I can’t count how many times me and my family have been here! Everyone we recommend loved Mee-Sen! Huge variety of Thai authentic cuisines, and my all time favorite is their boat noodles! The taste is flavorful and always fresh with the ingredients! Atmosphere is super cool, it feels like you are in Thailand. The hosts and servers are always super friendly and kind! 10 out of 10! ~ Alex M
My wife and I just moved into the area and wanted something different and decided to give Mee-Sen a try after reading a review of Portland’s 10 best Thai restaurants. It was a nice evening and we walked over to grab a bite, and was not disappointed! I’ve been to Thailand a couple of times for extended visits and Mee-Sen is the closest Thai food I’ve ever had back in the states. Very authentic, robust flavors, extensive menu with good portions and excellent variety of cocktails all at very affordable prices. We shared an appetizer and a cocktail each and two main course dishes all for under $50. The service was quick and friendly, the atmosphere is very much what one would find at Patong beach on the island of Phuket. Small, clean and efficient. My favorite moment was when I ordered my main dish, asked how hot I wanted it (mild, medium or hot)? I asked if I could get it Thai hot? My server asked American Thai hot, or Thai Thai hot? I ordered Thai Thai hot. And it was seriously spicy hot, in all the glorious ways only Thai’s can make! Go, explore, have an adventure and enjoy some seriously authentic Thai food that won’t break the bank. Either that, or book a trip to Bangkok. ~ Curtis P
One of my favorites in Portland. Try the Rika, you'll be surprised, it's amazing. Had a good experience on my birthday after not going out for a few years, the service was quick. Single gentleman serving was a bit overloaded, but he did everything great and in good time. I would and have regularly recommended this place when talking Thai food. Hard to beat ~ Alex D
This is the best Thai place I have been to in a long time, the food is absolutely delicious! You must try the Mango sticky rice dessert is so good and worth the hype! The curry is really tasty and the fried rice with fried egg on top...ufff delicious! Also kudos to the waitress, she was so helpful, kind and overall she privided the best service possible! ~ Gabriela P
Amazing service. Even better food. The waiter was excellent. They have great options for dietary restrictions and are very understanding. Everything was cooked to perfection and the flavors were spot on. The atmosphere makes you feel like you just walked into Thailand. Very cozy, clean, and not too cramped. Definitely coming back again and would send my friends here. ~ Yas C
We will definitely be returning! The atmosphere was fun and the food was delicious. I got the guay tiew tom kha and the flavor was amazing. I love Tom kha but rarely order it because I usually want something more substantial, so this was the perfect dish. Husband got the pad kratiem prik thai and it was super garlicky and yummy. Mango sticky rice was the perfect way to end the meal. ~ Kelli D
The sun was out for summer solstice, lo-fi music gently filled the space and the smells were tantalizing. Service was kind and attentive, the waiter recommended Khao soi, it was delicious! The chicken was fall apart tender, the Thai tea with herbal boba was cold and the boba was soft and flavorful. Dessert was mango sticky rice, sweet with a soft chew. Can't wait to go again! ~ Carlos L
